  • Class 5 non-GDL Licence

  • 113 hours of classroom and practical training.

Starting April 1, 2025, Alberta will introduce an apprenticeship-style Class 1 driver training model. This new system will provide a more structured approach to becoming a Class 1 driver, potentially offering additional benefits and opportunities for aspiring truck drivers.

 

  1. Take the Knowledge Test

After registering for the MELT program, your next step is to pass the Class 1 knowledge test. To do your exam before finishing the course your must be able to present Class 1 Classroom Evaluation form showing test score of 80% or higher. The knowledge exam assesses your understanding of traffic laws, safe driving practices, and specific regulations related to operating large commercial vehicles.   1. Schedule and Pass the Class 1 Road Test

Once you've passed the knowledge test, it's time to prove your practical skills through the Class 1 road test. This comprehensive evaluation assesses your ability to operate a large commercial vehicle in various driving conditions safely and is conducted off-site generally with a driving school.
