Eligibility for a Class 6 Motorcycle Licence in Alberta

To be eligible for an Alberta Class 6 motorcycle licence, you must meet these requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years old and have, at minimum, a Class 7 learner’s licence for at least one year.

  • If you already have a Class 7 driver's licence or higher, you must take a knowledge and road test.

  • If you don’t have a Class 5 or Class 7 licence, you must first complete all the Class 7 requirements including having the licence for one year. Then you must pass a Class 6 knowledge and road test. Then you’ll be placed in the Graduated Driver’s Licence program (GDL) for up to two years.

  • You must pass a vision screening.

Registry @ South Trail Crossing can book all the tests for you, and you can take the examinations at our Calgary location.

Vehicles You Can Drive with a Class 6 Licence

A Class 6 motorcycle licence enables you to ride mopeds and two- or three-wheeled motorcycles of any engine size. You can also drive Class 5 vehicles, including cars, SUVs and light trucks, as a learner with someone who has a full Class 5 licence.

Steps to Obtain Your Class 6 Licence

Obtaining your Class 6 motorcycle licence involves a few straightforward steps. Registry @ South Trail Crossing is here to assist you at every stage.

  1. Pass the knowledge test. Visit our office to take the Class 6 knowledge test (tests are first come first serve). The test assesses your understanding of motorcycle laws and safe riding practices.

  2. Book your road test. Once you feel ready, take your Class 6 road test with Registry @ South Trail Crossing. You’ll need to bring your own street-legal motorcycle. Also, ensure your phone is equipped with earbuds so you can communicate with the examiner.

  3. Obtain your licence. If you pass the tests, you’ll receive your Class 6 Alberta motorcycle licence. This allows you to ride under certain restrictions. The GDL program is two years.
