Types of Driver’s Abstracts

A driver’s abstract includes merit and demerit points, suspensions, and convictions on your driving record. They can cover periods of 3, 5, or 10 years. An Alberta driver’s abstract comes in two forms:

A standard driver’s abstract summarizes a motorist’s driving record. In addition to the licence number and issue date, it includes the driver’s name, address, and physical characteristics (i.e., height, weight, and sex). It also states licence status and information about convictions, demerits, and suspensions. The standard abstract doesn’t show driving experience or the date the individual was first licensed.

A commercial driver’s abstract includes the details in a standard abstract, except for the driver’s physical characteristics. Additionally, it contains information about Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspections.

Abstracts contain confidential information and can be released only to a client requesting their own information.

How to Order an Abstract If You’re Outside Alberta

If you’re not in the province and don’t have someone to apply for an abstract on your behalf, you can send us the following to our Calgary office:

A completed Notarized Request for Personal Driving and Motor Vehicle Information form
A notarized photocopy of your photo ID with your legal name and date of birth
The driver abstract fee
A return pre-addressed, registered mail or courier envelope with prepaid postage or courier fees

Ordering an Abstract on Behalf of Someone Else

You can also order an abstract for someone else by visiting our Calgary office. You’ll need a consent form filled out by the individual requesting the abstract, and you’ll have to fill out a Driver Abstract Statement of Intent form in front of one of our registry agents. You’ll also need a valid photo ID and must have an Alberta Motor Vehicle file.

Ordering an Abstract for a Minor

You can request an abstract for someone under 18 years old if you’re their legal parent or guardian. They will have to complete the Driver’s Abstract Statement of Intent Form.
