ALBERTA HEALTH CARE PLAN
Important: Alberta Health Care is changing (effective July 2, 2026)
Alberta is combining health care information with driver’s licences and ID cards. For eligible Albertans, your Personal Health Number (PHN) is now added to your driver’s licence or ID card — this is called an integrated card. Here’s what to know:

Your PHN and your AHCIP coverage expiry date now appear on your driver’s licence or ID card.

When you renew or apply for a licence or ID, your AHCIP coverage is revalidated in person. We confirm your identity, address, family details, and legal entitlement, so please bring the required original documents.

AHCIP coverage now has an expiry date and must be renewed before it expires, or coverage will be cancelled. You’ll receive a reminder about two months before it expires.

On an integrated card, your AHCIP expiry matches your licence/ID expiry. If you receive a standalone health card instead, it most often has a five-year expiry.

Some people are not eligible for an integrated card (for example, temporary residents on work or study permits) and will continue to receive a standalone or mobile health card. See alberta.ca for full eligibility details.

WHAT TO BRING
To revalidate your Alberta Health Care coverage and get your integrated card, bring:

Your physical Alberta Health Care card (or mobile health card).

Your current driver’s licence or ID card.

An original document proving your legal entitlement to be in Canada (Canadian birth certificate, permanent resident card, or other accepted document).
There is no additional fee to add your PHN to your card — standard licence/ID fees apply. This service is in person only and cannot be done online.
