WHAT IS AN ALBERTA MARRIAGE LICENCE?

A marriage licence is a two-part document that demonstrates to the person performing your marriage that you’ve met all the legal requirements to be married in Alberta. Alberta marriage licences are valid for 90 days from the date they’re issued. The fees include a $40 government charge, plus additional registry agent fees.

Your marriage ceremony can take place the same day a marriage licence is issued. There is no waiting time. Additionally, an Alberta marriage licence is valid only for an Alberta marriage, meaning the marriage ceremony must take place in Alberta.

REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING AN ALBERTA MARRIAGE LICENCE

When applying for a marriage licence, both you and your intended spouse must meet the following conditions:

  • Be at least 18 years of age. If you are under 18, contact a registry agent for details on how to proceed.

  • Apply together, in person at the registry agent office.

  • Be fluent in the English language or provide an interpreter who is at least 18 years of age and is fluent in both English and the language requiring translation.

  • Provide a valid, government-issued photo ID, such as a passport, treaty status card, Canadian citizenship card, or driver’s licence.

  • Provide personal information, such as your full names and the birthplaces of your parents, including a parent’s maiden name.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MARRIAGE LICENCE AND CERTIFICATE?

A marriage licence confirms that you and your intended spouse are eligible to legally get married in Alberta, and is required before you get married. A marriage certificate proves that you are legally married, and can be ordered six to eight weeks after the wedding ceremony.
