INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENCE

Apply for an International Driver’s Licence in Calgary

An international driver’s licence is what travellers often ask about, which is formally known as an International Driving Permit (IDP). It is a translated driving document that supports a valid Canadian driver’s licence when operating a motor vehicle in certain foreign jurisdictions.

In Canada, only the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) and the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) are authorized to issue an IDP. An IDP does not replace a provincial driver’s licence. It must be carried together with a valid Alberta driver’s licence at all times while driving outside Canada. Contact Registry @ South Trail Crossing for guidance on international driver’s licence applications in Alberta.

WHAT IS AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENCE?

An International Driving Permit is a standardized document recognized under United Nations road traffic conventions. It provides official translations of your Canadian driver’s licence into multiple languages, allowing foreign authorities to interpret your driving credentials.

Key factual points include:

  • It is valid only when presented with a current provincial driver’s licence.

  • It does not grant driving privileges on its own.

  • Acceptance depends on the destination country.

  • It is intended for temporary travel, not residency.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENCE

Alberta residents must complete applications for an international driver’s licence exclusively through AMA or CAA

The process generally includes:

  • Apply in person or by mail through AMA or CAA.

  • Submitting required identification and documents.

  • Paying the standard issuance fee set by the issuing organization.

Important clarification:

  • Registry @ South Trail Crossing does not process, issue, or submit IDP applications.

  • Alberta registry offices are not authorized to create or validate International Driving Permits.

Applicants should confirm destination requirements before applying, as not every country requires an IDP.

DOCUMENTS YOU NEED

When applying through AMA or CAA, the following documents are typically required:

  • A valid Alberta driver’s licence.

  • Two original passport-size photographs.

  • Completed IDP application form.

  • Applicable processing fee.

Additional considerations:

  • The Alberta driver’s licence must not be expired.

  • Temporary or learner licences are not accepted.

  • Photocopies of licences are not sufficient.

Requirements may vary slightly between AMA and CAA offices. Applicants are advised to verify current document standards directly with the issuing organization.

HOW LONG IS THE INTERNATIONAL DRIVER’S LICENCE VALID?

An International Driving Permit issued in Canada is valid for:

  • The International Driving Permit is valid for up to one year from the date it is issued and cannot be extended beyond this period.

  • Renewal is not permitted, and applicants must submit a new application if a permit is needed after expiry.

  • If the holder’s provincial driver’s licence expires before the one-year period ends, the International Driving Permit becomes invalid on the same date.

The IDP cannot be post-dated or extended. Travellers should plan applications close to their departure date to maximize usability.

CONTACT LOCAL AMA OR CAA

For an international driver’s licence, travellers require applications to be submitted directly to:

  • Alberta Motor Association (AMA)

  • Canadian Automobile Association (CAA)

Applicants should confirm:

  • Office locations: Verify the nearest branch offering international driver’s licence services, as availability may vary by location.

  • Appointment requirements: Check whether an appointment is required or if walk-in applications are accepted.

  • Accepted payment methods: Confirm which forms of payment are accepted, such as debit, credit card, or cash.

  • Processing timelines: Ask about same-day processing availability and any factors that may affect turnaround time due to document verification.

Processing is typically completed on the same day for in-person applications, subject to document verification.
