DRIVER’S LICENCE RENEWAL
Online renewal has changed (effective July 2, 2026)
Online driver’s licence and ID renewal is no longer offered in Alberta. All renewals are now completed in person at a registry office so your identity and legal entitlement can be confirmed and, where applicable, your Personal Health Number added to your card. Visit us in person and we’ll take care of it.
When you renew on or after July 2, 2026, please bring:
-
Your current driver’s licence or ID card.
-
An original document proving your legal entitlement to be in Canada — for example a Canadian birth certificate, Canadian passport, citizenship certificate, or permanent resident card.
-
Your physical Alberta Health Care card, if you have AHCIP coverage (so your PHN can be added and your coverage revalidated).
-
Proof of Alberta residency dated within 90 days (such as a utility bill or bank statement), and a completed medical report if you are 75+, hold a Class 1, 2 or 4 licence, or have a medical condition.
-
If you’re not sure what applies to you, call us at 403-246-4646 or check alberta.ca for the full list of accepted documents.

Renewing Your Driver’s Licence in Person
You can start your driver’s licence renewal by visiting our office in person. Make sure you have your existing driver’s licence with you. For those with medical conditions, a code “C” licence, people 75 years old or older, or those holding a professional driver’s licence Class 1, 2 and 4, a completed medical form is required to renew your licence.
If your driver’s licence has expired more than 6 months ago, you must bring additional documents to prove your entitlement to be in Canada, such as a valid passport or birth certificate, or original work and study permits, etc. You also need to bring a utility bill or residential lease agreement as proof of residency in Alberta.
