Renewing Your Driver’s Licence in Person

You can start your driver’s licence renewal by visiting our office in person. Make sure you have your existing driver’s licence with you. For those with medical conditions, a code “C” licence, people 75 years old or older, or those holding a professional driver’s licence Class 1, 2 and 4, a completed medical form is required to renew your licence.

If your driver’s licence has expired more than 6 months ago, you must bring additional documents to prove your entitlement to be in Canada, such as a valid passport or birth certificate, or original work and study permits, etc. You also need to bring a utility bill or residential lease agreement as proof of residency in Alberta.

Renewing Your Driver’s Licence Remotely

If you are outside of Alberta or can’t leave your home for medical reasons, it is possible to renew your driver’s licence remotely by completing the Remote Driver's Licence/ID Card Application. You will also need to provide proof of residency as well as identification in Alberta.

Renewing Your Driver’s Licence Online

Another possibility for renewing your driver’s licence is to renew it online. If you hold a class 3, 5, 6 or 7 driver’s licence you are eligible for online renewal. To renew online you will need:

  • Verified MyAlberta account

  • Valid driver’s licence

  • Credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express)

  • Current web browser (Internet Explorer 6 or higher, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari).

Bear in mind that you will only be able to renew your driver’s licence online if it is not expired and you are not making any changes to it, such as name, address, or other information. Additionally, drivers who have outstanding fines will have to pay their fines and wait two to three business days before they are able to start their online renewal process.
