Are you ready to feel the wind in your hair as you drive down the road? Maybe it's a relaxing drive in the country or simply your need to commute that has you looking into getting your driver's license. Whatever the reason, life is easier when you've got your own way of getting around.
However, there are some requirements you'll need to meet before you can acquire your class 5 driver's license. One of those requirements is taking an Alberta road test exam. Keep reading to find out how you can book a driving test in Calgary!
CLASS 5 GDL VERSUS FULL CLASS 5 LICENSE
There are two types of Private Passenger Class 5 licenses that you may be interested in acquiring. The first one is a Class 5 GDL or graduated driver's license. The second is the full class 5 driver's license.
The full class 5 license is an upgrade to the GDL. You'll need to first acquire a GDL license before you are able to qualify to take the full class 5 advanced road test.
CLASS 5 GDL
An Alberta road test exam is the last step before you will be approved for a driver's license. There are steps before the driving test that you will need to take. For the GDL, you will need to hold a Class 7 learner's license for at least a year. A class 7 learner’s license is available to those over the age of 14 and qualification requires the successful passing of a knowledge test and a vision assessment.
You may only acquire a Class 5 GDL if you are 16 or older. However, if you are under 18 you must have a parent or guardian's consent.
FULL CLASS 5 LICENSE
To qualify for a Full Class 5 license, you must possess a Class 5 GDL for a minimum of two years. In the past year, you can not have any record of suspension or cancellation of your GDL. In addition, you will need to be at least 18 years old.
After meeting those requirements, you will qualify to take an advanced road test for the purpose of obtaining a full class 5 private passenger license.
You will be required to supply certain documents to take the road test. These include valid registration and insurance on the vehicle in which you take your test. The vehicle also must successfully pass a safety inspection conducted by the road test examiner.
If any fines are owed to the Government of Alberta, you will be required to pay those before taking a road test. Your MVID number, or Motor Vehicle Identification number, will be used to book your road exam.
There will also be a fee to take the Alberta road test exam.
BE PREPARED TO SHOW YOUR SKILL
For the Class 5 GDL, the road test lasts 30 minutes. In those 30 minutes, you will need to prove that you can drive a vehicle safely with others on the road. During the test, you will show that you are well versed in handling the vehicle. This includes braking, steering, and controlling your speed.
You'll also need to show that you can interact with others on the road in a proper manner, consider speed zones, choose the correct lane, and successfully execute numerous parking situations.
The Class 5 advanced license test is 60 minutes long. During this test, you will need to prove that you can operate in complicated intersections, merge onto the highway, safely drive on high-speed highways, and in high volumes of traffic.
