Birth certificate documents

A birth certificate is one of the most important documents you’ll ever need. Whether you’re applying for a passport, enrolling in school, or proving your identity, your Alberta birth certificate serves as official proof of birth and citizenship. If you were born in Alberta and need to request a birth certificate, this guide will walk you through the process, costs, and eligibility requirements.

Who Can Order a Birth Certificate in Alberta?

To request a birth certificate in Alberta, the birth must have been registered with Alberta Vital Statistics. If the birth hasn’t been registered yet, you’ll need to complete this step first. Registration is typically done by the parent or guardian shortly after birth, but delayed registration is possible if needed.

Generally, you can request a birth certificate if:

  • you are the person named on the certificate.

  • you are a parent or legal guardian of the person named on the certificate.

  • you have legal authorization or documentation to act on behalf of the person.

For full eligibility details, refer to the Government of Alberta’s eligibility guidelines.

Types of Birth Certificates Available

In Alberta, you can choose between:

  • Birth Certificate with Personal Information Only: includes the name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, registration number, date, and date issued.

  • Birth Certificate with Personal Information and Parentage: includes all of the above plus the names and places of birth of the parents.

  • Certified Copy of Birth Registration: a photocopy of a registration of birth that has all the details from the birth certificate including personal information and parent’s birthplace.

Note: Wallet-sized birth certificates are no longer issued. All certificates are now printed on secure, polymer paper in a 5x7-inch format.

Cost of a Birth Certificate in Alberta

As of 2025, the cost to order a birth certificate is $42.00 per certificate (includes government and registry service fees). Additional fees may apply if you request expedited service or choose to pick up the certificate in person at a registry office.

How to Request a Birth Certificate Through a Registry Office

Requesting a birth certificate through a registry office is one of the most reliable and secure methods. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Ensure the birth is registered

Before you can request a certificate, the birth must be registered with Alberta Vital Statistics. Most births are registered automatically by hospitals or midwives, but if not, you can register online or through a registry agent.

Step 2: Complete the application form

You’ll need to fill out the application for birth documents form. This includes:

  • full name of the person on the certificate

  • date and place of birth

  • parent information (if requesting parentage)

  • your relationship to the person

  • reason for request

If you’re applying in person, bring a valid government-issued photo ID.

Step 3: Submit your application at a registry office

Visit an authorized Alberta registry agent, such as Registry @ South Trail Crossing Ltd., and submit your completed form. The staff will verify your identity and process your request.

Step 4: Wait for processing

Standard processing time is approximately 3 business days, but delivery by mail may take 7–10 business days. You can choose to have the certificate mailed to you or pick it up at the registry office (additional service fees may apply).

Step 5: Receive your certificate

Once processed, your birth certificate will be delivered securely. If there are any issues with your application (e.g., missing or incorrect information), processing may be delayed.
