If you're considering a security services job as a security guard, locksmith or investigator, you must apply for a security licence. Alberta has specific requirements and procedures to ensure the safety and competence of security professionals. Here’s how to apply for a security service licence in Alberta.

Determine Your Eligibility

Before applying, you must determine if you’re eligible. The following requirements must be satisfied before applying for a security licence in Alberta:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age

  • You must provide valid, government-issued photo identification

  • You must provide a Criminal Record Check that is clear of any findings

  • You must be fluent in the English language

  • You must be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada

Documents to Acquire

  • Proof of Training

Depending on the type of security licence you are applying for, you must successfully complete an approved training course and attain a score of 80% or higher on the provincial final exam. If you pass the final exam, you’ll be emailed a certificate that you must submit with your security licence application.

For more information on approved training courses, visit the Government of Alberta website.

  • Criminal Record Check

Attend your local police service to request a Criminal Record Check with the following three searches:

  • CPIC

  • Vulnerable sector

  • Local database

Originals of emailed copies with the CPS watermark must be provided at the time of application. Criminal Record Checks will expire 90 days from the date of issue.

  • Photo

Obtain a passport-size photo. Visit your local Walmart or London Drugs to get a clear, colour photo that is stamped with the date it was taken. Photos must be dated within 90 days.

How to Apply for a Security Licence

Once you determine that you’ve met the eligibility requirements and obtained the necessary documents, you can submit your security licence application. Follow these steps:

  • Complete the application form. Visit your nearest Alberta registry office to obtain the required application form. Ensure you complete the application accurately and provide all requested information. A registry agent can assist you with this process.

  • Gather documents. In addition to the application form, proof of training and criminal record check, ensure that you bring your photo identification, proof of eligibility to work in Canada and a passport-size photo.

  • Submit and pay. To apply in-person, submit your security licence application to a licenced registry office. If your in-person application is approved, you’ll be given a temporary 60-day licence and your permanent card will arrive by mail shortly thereafter. The fees for a security licence are $100 and $160 for a locksmith or investigator licence. There is also a $9 service charge for in-person applications.

If you would prefer to pay online or you would like to apply for a dual security licence, visit the Government of Alberta website.
