Moving to different regions in Canada often requires that new residents have their documents exchanged or updated. If you are moving from Ontario to Alberta and are planning on driving in the province, you can transfer your driver’s licence. But how does the exchange process work and what documents are necessary?
How to Transfer Your Ontario Driver’s Licence to Alberta?
Alberta requires that new residents coming from other provinces in Canada have their driver’s licence exchanged in order to drive legally. This must be done within 90 days of becoming a resident in the province, even if you travel outside Alberta during those days. You will need to surrender your valid provincial driver’s licence to a registry agent so that a new one can be provided to you.
If you are exchanging a Class 3, 4, 5 or 6, you will be granted an Alberta driver’s licence of the same category, and you won’t need to take a knowledge test or a road test. However, those who hold class 5 or 6 licences and have less than two years of driving experience may be placed in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. Additionally, truck drivers holding a Class 1 licence may need to go under the new mandatory entry-level training for class 1 driver’s licence.
